Device Naming Best Practices
The ideal naming convention depends on the type of AV distribution system installed at your venue. The goal is to create names that are:
- Easy to identify
- Consistent across all devices
- Helpful for troubleshooting and support
- Scalable as your venue grows
Below are recommended naming strategies by system type.
1-to-1 Video Systems
For direct-display environments, it is recommended to name devices based on their physical viewing location within the venue.
Use clear location-based names that staff can easily recognize.
Example:
- Left Bar
- Center Bar
- Right Bar
- Patio East
- Patio West
AV Over IP Systems
For AV Over IP environments, a standardized numbering system is typically the most effective approach due to the flexible nature of the distribution system.
Use sequential numbering for all devices.
Example:
- EverPass 1
- EverPass 2
- EverPass 3
HDBaseT Distribution Systems
HDBaseT systems also benefit from a consistent numbering structure.
Use a sequential device numbering convention.
Example:
- EverPass 1
- EverPass 2
- EverPass 3
QAM Distribution Systems
For QAM-based systems, devices should typically be named according to the modulated channel they correspond to within your channel lineup.
Use channel-based naming.
Example:
- Channel 50
- Channel 51
- Channel 52
Hybrid Systems (1-to-1 + HDMI Distribution)
Hybrid systems often require a more customized naming strategy because layouts and signal routing can vary significantly between venues.
Use a combination of:
- Group-based naming for HDMI split zones
- Location-based naming for direct displays
Example:
- Group 1
- Group 2
- Patio East
- Patio West
- East 1
- East 2
- West 1
- West 2
A thoughtful naming strategy improves operational efficiency and helps both venue staff and EverPass Support quickly identify and manage devices throughout your deployment.
